Google Earth is a computer program developed and written by Google, an American multinational technology company. The program is a 3-Dimensional representation of the earth which shows different countries, cities and places on the basis of images of the earth from satellite. It was written in C++ and released in 2001. It is available in several languages. The idea of Google Earth was inspired by a spinning globe that could be zoomed into used in the film, Powers of the Ten. The technology was developed in 1990s at Intrinsic Graphics, at the time when the company was developing 3-Dimensional gaming software libraries. Although the program is quite helpful, it has been viewed as a privacy and national security threat and some areas, mostly military facilities, are hidden in Google’s satellite images.
